highly technical enquiry covering PCM-D, VAIO, and SonicStage Mastering Studio Recorder Edition Ver. 2.4.03

■お問い合わせ内容
Sorry for my highly technical enquiry covering PCM-D, VAIO, and SonicStage Mastering Studio Recorder Edition Ver. 2.4.03, but it is important:

I use the vaio desktop VPCL21AHJ but I have found that it will not recognise its Sound Reality chip for the software SonicStage Mastering Studio Recorder Edition Ver. 2.4.03. OS is Win 7 and supported. My reason for contact is because I wish to use DSD Mode and the SBM Direct that it enables the use of. I use PCM-D50 and D100 for DSD recording but wish to output or downsample to 16-bit wav via SBM Direct.
Is there some way for me to unlock DSD Mode via something like a registry modification? Since I did pay for use of the entire software and I have the Sound Reality chip. I do not wish to use only half of the SonicStage Mastering Studio Recorder Edition Ver. 2.4.03.

Super Bit Mapping technology enables the creation of higher quality CDs.

Super Bit Mapping (SBM) is Sony’s original digital sound processing technology. It takes high-quality 24bit/96KHz sound sources — through “AUDIO Capture” UA-25 or UA-101 — and transfers them to CDs with sound that is theoretically equivalent to 20bit sampling quality. Amazingly, this means that a CD recorded with SBM support contains virtually 16 times more information than regular CDs and allows extremely high-quality playback on conventional CD players. And by virtue of the SBM Direct function, DSD files can be output to music CD (or 44.1kHz WAV files) to provide extremely high quality playback of live recordings.

DSEE HX Ported to not only rooted Smartphones but also any Windows PC!!!

Dear Sir/Madam、

This is Ishi from the Customer Support Desks at Sony Marketing (Japan) Inc.

We are very sorry for the late reply.

This time we would like to re-acknowledge your inquiry that
other than Walkman, you have also expected a DSEE HX function that should be installed in "Music Center for PC" software, haven’t you?

If there is no difference as mentioned above, we have recognized that
in case that DSEE HX function is also equipped in "Music Center for PC",
you can enjoy music with better sound quality on your PC.
Ah, the irony and sarcasm.

In order to meet our customer's expectation, we shall send your expectation
to relevant in-charge departments for future product development.

Although we cannot promise that your expectation shall come true,
we are still looking forward to your ongoing support in the future.

Thank you for kind understanding.

Sincerely,
Ishi (Ms.)

品質について TEAC Hi-Res Editor のPCM(WAV) and DSD 変換

Noah Nishihara Mastering; Mastering 1 Leo Graf
To TEAC:
Could you briefly explain the process by which TEAC Hi-Res Editor is able to convert PCM to DSD and vice versa? I would like to know the exact tap no. of, say the FIR filter among other processes. Is DSD to PCM conversion done in one stage like SBM Direct?
And after: [Our reply]
TEAC Hi-Res Editor is possible to convert PCM(WAV) and DSD mutually.
However, we have not published any information about conversion process and so on.
We would like you to understand it.
Well I frankly don’t understand it and would like a proper answer from the engineering faculty. Please refer to this media article in which Sony in 2005 released specific information regarding their processing: http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20050905/dal204.htm

DSD DirectではPCMの信号を30,000タップのFIRフィルターで高精度演算

I utilise TEAC DSD DACs here in Australia professionally and my clients have at times spoken of conversion quality. It is imperative that TEAC releases some bare essentials/specs in order to gain our trust and show that TEAC is as diligent and worthy of support as Sony.

Super Bit Mapping (SBM) and Super Bit Mapping-Direct (SBM-Direct)???

Firstly, do not confuse Super Bit Mapping (SBM) with Super Bit Mapping-Direct (SBM-Direct). SBM is a noise-shaping/dithering scheme based on the audibility of the average human ear. Human hearing is more sensitive in the 1 kHz to 3 kHz range than it is at low and high frequencies. SBM (or noise-shaping in general) takes advantage of this to move noise to frequencies where the ear is less sensitive. The result is an effective 20-bit performance in the sensitive range, and worsening performance with increasing frequency for a 16-bit system like CD. Weiss, Prism and Meridian also made noise-shapers that utilized the U-shaped ear sensitivity curve while Apogee's UV-22 had a better than 16-bit performance from DC to about 13 kHz before the SNR went almost vertical.

SBM-Direct is the confusing name that Sony in Japan gave to the process for decimating DSD data to 16-bit/44.1 kHz PCM to make the CD layer of hybrid discs. It is possible that SBM noise-shaping is part of this process, but that has never been made clear (as far as I know).
